Importance of Meta Tags

By sellinasmith at 2010-02-10 05:39:24
It would be unwise to leave out Meta keyword tags or Meta description tags from your web page even though these are not the main factors that search engines employ when ranking your site. The meta description tag supplies a brief as well as concise summary of the contents of your web page while the meta keyword tag supplies a summary list of the words on your web page that are of much importance.

The Meta Description Tag represents the section of the hypertext markup language (HTML) code that permits you to apply a summary from your web site content. The textual content placed in this meta tag is frequently applied in the Search Engines result pages (serps) exactly beneath the Title as a short description of your web page.

The Description Meta tag has a similar application to the Title Meta tag in that many search engines pull from it for their search results, displaying it as the description under a site's hyperlink on results pages. This application is not universal, as Google frequently creates its own description dynamically from the content of your site.

Meta is the Greek word for “over”, and the “meta-tags” were initially designed to carry all sort of meta-information, meaning “information-about”. Using meta-tags for specifying keywords or a description for a webpage is not an HTML standard convention, but it is a widely accepted use of the meta-tags.

Mostly, the actual meta tag contents are not visible, but the "description" tag's information will be shown on nearly all of the search engine results as well as the title page when the results are revealed. Avoid repetition of keywords in the description tag, and keep the description text relevant.

Meta Description Tags:

The meta description is a text statement that gives an abstract about what the page is about. Search engines can only read about 255 characters, so most descriptions are limited to 1-2 sentences. What is significant about the meta description tag is the potential opportunity to influence how your page appears in a search engine. The 1-2 lines of text under the title of a page in a search engine can be influenced by the meta description tag.

If you have never seen them before, right click with your mouse on any web page and then click "view source". If the site is using meta tags, there are three that are the most important and they are located in the "head" section of the source code: title, description, and keywords.

You want to use keywords that are found in the body of your website. This increases the relevancy of your keywords. This does not mean that you should have lines of keywords imbedded into your website. Rather you should choose the words that are a part of the natural flow of your content. With that being said, it might serve you better to write the content of your website prior to identifying the appropriate keywords.

Meta tags appear just after your (HEAD) tag on your page and then end with the closing (/Head) tag. This is all at the top of your HTML document. You can't break anything by changing the meta tags, just affect what search engines and people will get when they receive search engine traffic.
